It was on the news last week that a popular milk brand has been banned in China after 432 babies were reported to have become ill after drinking Sanlu Milk. Also, 102 infants were diagnosed to have kidney stones and two have died because of the milk consumption.
According to the Health Ministry of China, the powdered milk has been tested positive with the chemical melamine. The milk was manufactured by Haoniu Dairy, a partner of Sanlu Grop, a leading dairy producer in China.Consequently, many Asian countries (such as Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Burma, Bangladesh) have followed suit, banning Chinese milk products from the market. Here in the Philippines, BFAD (Bureau of Food and Drugs) has given the pull-out order for milk products from the Sanlu Group. However, other Chinese milk products from other manufacturers are still in the market.
Nevertheless, BFAD has already issued a public statement, warning Filipino consumers against buying milk products from China, particularly those without the BFAD approval seal.
Apparently, this wasn't the first time that Chinese food products have been banned. Last July, BFAD has also issued a warning against Chinese candies (ex. White Rabbit candies) that contain toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde or formalin, hydrochloric acid, industrial paraffin, malachite green dye (a known carcinogen).
This is really getting alarming as Chinese food products abound in groceries and small markets. Most of them have attractive packages, particularly candies, biscuits, chocolates, and milk products. What's even more alarming is that these food products inflict grave danger to people's health.
Everyone should certainly exercise caution when buying their groceries. Because not all products are clearly specified or pulled out from the market, consumers must be discreet in making decisions. Personally, I wouldn't buy any Chinese food products right now since not all have been cleared from this mess.
